CARDS FOR EVERYTHING
Christmas, New Year, Valentine's Day, birthday, Halloween... the British and Americans have cards for all occasions.
The tradition of sending greetings* is very old. The ancient Egyptians often gave scarabs* with good luck messages on them. The Romans sent presents inscribed with "Have a happy and lucky New Year". People started sending cards after the printing press* was invented. In Great Britain, sending cards became more popular when the postal service was introduced in 1840.
Today, cards are for any occasion. In Great Britain there are even cards to wish people good luck with their exams ! But the most popular are Christmas and New Year cards. Americans send 2.6 billion* every year.
The tradition of sending love notes on February 14 started with St Valentine, a Christian killed by the Romans on 14 February 207. The night before he died, he sent a girl a goodbye message signed "from your Valentine." February 14 was made the official Valentine's Day by England's King Henry VIII in 1537.
Britain is still a nation of romantics. They send more Valentine's cards than the USA - 20 million a year ! Lots of romantic English people go to a small village in Wiltshire to send their Valentine cards. Why ? Because the village is called Lover.
Adapted from "The World in English" January 2000.
